Chaplaincy Program

The hospital chaplain is an integral member of the healthcare team, who makes daily rounds and is available 24-hours a day to provide pastoral care for patients, family and staff. The chaplain is available to provide objective crisis intervention and spiritual support.

Support For Patients’ Families
The chaplain is available to the Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit and all areas of the hospital to help the distressed family, a critically ill or dying patient. Call (573) 458-7935 for the chaplain’s office.

In-House Chapel
A chaplain is on call 24-hours a day to meet your emotional and spiritual needs. To contact a chaplain, call (573) 458-7935. The chapel is located on the first floor down the hall from the surgery waiting area. If coming from the ICU, exit off the visitor elevators on the first floor, turn left and follow the hallway until you see the Ambulatory Surgery sign (hanging from the ceiling). Turn left and the chapel is located on your right.

Liaison For Local Clergy
Usually, the hospital chaplain sees a patient before his or her minister is aware of the hospitalization. With the patient’s permission, the chaplain can call the family pastor, priest, rabbi or other religious leader.

Community Contact
Serving as the hospital’s religious community public relations person, the chaplain is able to coordinate services provided to the clergy. The chaplain is prepared to conduct seminars and workshops on topics such as hospital visitation, terminal illness, death and dying and the grieving process.

The chaplaincy program, which began in 1987, is part of volunteer services. Its self-defined purpose is “to assist the members of the Phelps County Regional Medical Center’s staff to better treat the whole patient and to cooperate with the administration of the hospital in providing complete hospital care for the sick of the community.” PCRMC chaplains can serve you and your family, at your request, in the following ways:

• Praying with you and/or your family;
• Providing support before and after a medical procedure;
• Offering support when facing a difficult decision;
• Emotional support in times of stress;
• Helping to ease feelings of fear;
• Dealing with grief or death.

Chaplain Letter
To our patients and families,

Please know you are not alone in your illness or injury. We know you are more than tests and medicine and therapy. You have spiritual and emotional needs that are tied in to your overall health. The mutual trust we develop will give you a chance to address the faith that brings you strength and peace in a difficult time. Our pledge to you: we will help or find someone who can.

We are part of the hospital team and work with them for your benefit. That means we are dedicated to doing our part and standing aside for others to do theirs. If you tell us you are in pain, we will make your nurses aware. If you tell them of your spiritual needs, they will make us aware.

Your family is part of you. Don’t be afraid to include them in our ministry to you. Our goal is to provide the best possible atmosphere for support and healing. Sometimes families grow tremendously when someone is sick. We wouldn’t want you to miss that chance.

We’re here because you’re here. Don’t hesitate to ask for help in getting to the next step in your life.

Sincerely,
Phil Cox, Ph.D.
Pastoral Care Director
